One of Queen Elizabeth's bridesmaids not invited to coronation

Lady Pamela Hicks, one of Queen Elizabeth's bridesmaids, has been informed she hasn't been invited to King Charles' coronation on May 6.

India Hicks, Lady Pamela's daughter and the King's goddaughter, has shared the news – and her mother's reaction – on Instagram.

She explained two phone calls from someone claiming to be from Buckingham Palace had been received at her mother's home, but India's daughter Domino thought they were spam calls and hung up.

They later discovered the palace was indeed trying to contact Lady Pamela.

"One of the King's personal secretaries was passing on a message from the King," India shared.

"They explained that this coronation was to be very different to the Queen's. 8,000 guests would be whittled down to 1,000 alleviating the burden on the state.

"The King was sending his great love and apologies, he was offending many family and friends with the reduced list."

India said her mother "was not offended at all" and thought it was "very sensible" to base invitations on "meritocracy not aristocracy."

Lady Pamela added she was going to "follow with great interest the events of this new reign."

"We have recently been looking through old photographs. Her astonishing memory recalled a very funny story about this photograph of my mother with young Princess Elizabeth," India continued.

"Today my mother turns 94 years old, she must be one of the few remaining people with such a memory intact, about to live through a third coronation.

"Happy Birthday to my darling Mum."

King Charles has opted for a slimmed-down ceremony for his coronation, in keeping with his desire for a slimmed-down monarchy.

Just 2,000 guests have been invited to Westminster Abbey to attend the historic event.

The palace explained the coronation will be "very different to the Queen's."

Lady Pamela was eight when she was taken to see George VI being crowned in 1937. A young Prince Charles then attended her wedding to David Hicks.

Lady Pamela's father was the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and Prince Philip's uncle.

She attended the Queen's wedding to Prince Philip in 1947, serving as bridesmaid alongside Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandra of Kent.

While the King's coronation ceremony will have limited seats and a restricted guest list, his coronation concert on the East Lawn of Windsor Castle 24 hours later will invite others to join, including Sarah Ferguson and her daughters Beatrice, 34, and Eugenie, 33.

At 94, Lady Pamela is unlikely to attend the concert event.
