This year was Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Doug Emhoff's first Valentine's Day since Harris took office and they celebrated in part by handing out sweet treats to essential healthcare workers.

The couple stopped by Washington DC VA Centre and shared cookies which read: 'Have a sweet Valentine's Day! We appreciate you. Kamala & Doug.'

They were joined by newly VA secretary Denis McDonough and his wife Kari.

Emhoff shared a photo of the visit on his Instagram page along with the caption: "This Valentine's Day weekend, our hearts are with the health care heroes working around-the-clock to support our country during this difficult time.

"I'm so glad Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough and Kari McDonough could join us as we thanked the hardworking staff at the DC VA Medical Center."

Emohoff later posted a special tweet for Valentine's Day. It reads: "Happy Valentine's Day, honey. We've got big adventures ahead. I couldn't be more excited to be your partner on this journey."

Harris was sworn in as Vice President of the United States on January 20, with Emhoff by her side. The couple were set up on a blind date Harris' best friend in 2013.

Suffice to say they hit it off and were married the following year.

The couple celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary in August 2020, with Harris writing on social media: "@douglasemhoff, there's no one I'd rather be with on this journey."

When Harris made history as the nation's first female Vice President last week, her husband became the first male spouse to stand beside any serving VP.

Now his role as the 'Second Gentleman' has been made official, the phrase having been added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary this week. The definition reads "the husband or male partner of a vice president or second in command of a country or jurisdiction".

Emhoff was happy with his historic inclusion in the dictionary, tweeting: "Well, now it's official. @MerriamWebsterjust added "Second Gentleman' to the dictionary. I might be the first, but I won't be the last."

Harris' was equally powerful during her speech when elected as Vice President, saying: "While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching sees that this is a country of possibilities."
