Julie Bishop reveals how the government intends to work with Donald Trump

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop appeared on TODAY to discuss her plans for working with new US President Donald Trump.

The government has vowed to ensure our relationship remains as strong as ever with the United States of America, and Bishop admitted this morning that she had anticipated that Trump would be “a very strong candidate” for the role of President of the United States.

She admitted that “The Australian government has been preparing for either a Trump win OR a Clinton win,” and assured the public that “we are well placed to engage very constructively and productively with the Trump transition team. In the meantime we will work with the Obama administration.”

She assured the public that the government see “many opportunities to work very productively, in Australia’s national interest, with the new president and his administration.”

Bishop also added that she believes that Australia is seen as strong ally by the USA, and is confident that will continue throughout Trump’s presidency.

Speaking about trade deals across the pond, Bishop admitted that they will “always be a challenge”, but said that the new administration may seek to re-negotiate the trans-pacific trade deal. She reassured the public that continuing to “seek trade deals that benefit Australia” is of upmost importance to our government.
