Odd reason woman was rejected after job interview

You can tell when a job interview has gone well. It's a feeling that leaves a spring in your step.

Ellie Anderson from Cardiff recently attended a job interview and she thought she had done very well, so it was even more shocking when she received a rejection email.

In the email, an odd reason was given for her rejection, one that left her so taken aback she shared it on Twitter.

She posted a screenshot of the email along with the description: "First time I've ever been told I've got a strong Welsh accent, so I suppose that's a win?"

The email reads: "Hi Ellie. Thank you so much for time in applying for the role of .... and attending the interview at such short notice.

"We thought you were fantastic, and performed very well throughout. Your skill set would reflect well in the role.

"I'm sorry to say, however, that we have decided not to proceed with your application," the email continues. "It was decided that your strong Welsh accent, accompanied by your regional activities, would not suit the office environment.

"Thanks once again for your interest and time," the email concludes."

The woman's Twitter followers were quick to claim discrimination, with some suggesting she take legal action.

"This sounds racist," says one.

"I think you'll find that that reply furnishes you with a strong claim for employment discrimination," suggests another. "Seriously — take advice."

She has even received offers of legal representation on Twitter.

Her post has triggered a debate about accents, with many alleging it is only some accents that are deemed unfavourable, with one sharing a chart ranking how attractive accents in the region are.

Welsh is third most attractive, but still not employable at this company apparently.

Although others say they too were rejected for the same reason.

"I live in Canada. Years ago I applied for a job as a 911 dispatcher (emergency services). At the time they required a Canadian' accent and might still even now. For that purpose, it was not illegal to require it," they explain.

"Please tell me this isn't real. Although- wait- my current employers DID tell me my Scottish accent might be a problem doing the job I've been doing for 20 years- teaching my own language. The English just love to put us wee folk in our place, don't they?!" says another.

Another writes: "Really rude and probably illegal."

"Also what are 'regional activities,'" asks another.

One Twitter follower comments: "Ellie, be proud of your accent. This has made my blood boil. Unfortunately I'm not sure this is covered by the equality act as I don't think White Welsh is a protected racial group. I might be wrong. If you would consider naming and shaming the company. I would appreciate it!"

Although thus far, Ellie hasn't named the company in question.
