After days of waiting with baited breath and plenty of protests in the city of Venice, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have tied the knot.

The pair were married in the Italian city on June 27, with Sánchez's gown shortly after revealed on the cover of Vogue and via a picture posted to her Instagram.

The timeless piece was custom-made by Dolce & Gabbana for the occasion, and you'll never guess how long it took.

According to Vogue, the gown took "900 hours of atelier work" to bring to life.

To put that into perspective, if the designers had sat down to complete the dress with no breaks for eating, sleeping or the bathroom, it still would have taken more than a month to complete.

But, it seems it was worth it in the end as the bride told Vogue that "the whole thing was like a dream".

The dress features "little, little, little buttons" all the way from neck to torso and continued down the train with 180 hand-finished, silk chiffon-cover buttons in total.

The mermaid style, lace gown is something unique to Sanchez, and probably not what many expected her to wear.

Sánchez was one of the six women who recently travelled to space on the Blue Origin flight, and she tells Vogue that the journey completely changed the way she thought about her dress.

Whereas she originally wanted something more modern with a "sexy silhouette", after her return to earth she went the complete opposite way.

"It went from 'I want a simple, sexy modern dress' to 'I want something that evokes a moment,' and where I am right now," she explained.

"I am a different person than I was five years ago.

She continued, "I went into a lot of therapy and it's changed me in a bunch of ways. But it's really Jeff.

"Jeff hasn't changed me. Jeff has revealed me. I feel safe. I feel seen. He lets me be me.

"Like I said about Sophia Loren being unapologetically free, he lets me be unapologetically free."

The three-day affair is estimated to have cost some €40-€48 million euros ($71.7- $86.1 million), according to Reuters.

The wedding marks the second marriage for both Bezos and Sánchez, who have seven children between them.

Sánchez has three children; 19- and 17-year-old Evan and Ella, from her marriage to Hollywood executive Patrick Whitesell and 24-year-old Nikko from a previous relationship.

Bezos, who is notoriously private about his family life, shares four children with his former wife MacKenzie Scott: three sons and a daughter.
