Life under COVID-19 restrictions has forced many of us into roles we'd never expect to play, be it teacher, obsessive sourdough baker, or loungeroom aerobics devotee.

A bold few have even ventured into the world of home hairdressing, attempting DIY cuts and colours — both on themselves and others — with varying degrees of success.

Fortunately for New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, her fiance's foray into lockdown hairdressing has been a success.

(Well... as far as we can tell, anyway.)

Clarke Gayford shared his prowess on Twitter on Sunday, explaining he'd assisted in colouring Ardern's hair and given their daughter Neve, who turns two next month, a trim.

"Helped dye partner's hair and gave daughter a haircut with scissors I bought at supermarket for $6. Remarkably both parties still talking to me," the TV presenter wrote.

There's a lot to commend here. A DIY haircut is hard enough with the best of tools, let alone scissors that cost less than a tenner.

As for Ardern's hair, even the most seasoned at-home self-colourist knows things can go pear-shaped very quickly (dye splashes on your forehead, anyone?).

For most of us, the perk of isolation is that very few people will bear witness to the disastrous results of a box dye gone awry, but that's not exactly the case when you're a world leader.

Sadly, Gayford didn't post any photo evidence so we don't know what the final result looked like — we'll have to wait for the next New Zealand government press conference.

The broadcaster's tweet got plenty of love, with one user suggesting some reciprocity was required: "Fair is fair Clarke, you now need to let Neve cut your hair."

While the pandemic has been keeping Ardern busy, the Prime Minister has been sharing some candid vignettes of her family's life in lockdown.

Like this snap, which she captioned, "Why is it only when you are the furtherest you could possibly be from a change of clothes before you notice that you have nappy cream on you?"

And this one of a packed breakfast Ardern's mother had made for her, including tea in a keep cup, for a particularly early start to the work day:
