Major back track for Instagram couple, who begged for money for African trip

An Instagram couple has decided to "step away from social media" after facing massive backlash when they asked fans to fund their lavish lifestyle.

Catalin Onc and Elena Engelhardt run the Instagram page Another Beautiful Day and recently asked their 40k followers to chip in for a tandem bicycle trip they had planned from their native Germany to Africa.

They set up a GoFundMe asking for €10,000 ($16,000) to pay for the trip and seemed surprised when critics and fans both slammed them for the move.

Fans were furious that the couple claimed they couldn't earn the money because getting a job would be "detrimental" to them, revealing that their Instagram lifestyle is currently supported by Onc's mother, who works two jobs.

The couple also claimed that they "didn't support consumerism" so wouldn't do modelling work to raise the money, despite having modelled extensively before.

Unsurprisingly, fans called them out for the obnoxious request for money, driving the pair off social media entirely it seems.

"I will step away from social media for a little while," Onc captioned a recent post.

"I mentioned that I'll be doing the hardest thing I've ever done mentally and physically, soon. Here it is. I am going on a walk."

He went on to explain that he would be abandoning social media to "walk as long as [he] possibly can" with no sleep, social media, or distractions.

This comes just weeks after he and Engelhardt claimed it would be "selfish" of them to leave social media, because they have such an "impact" on other people's lives there.

Of course, fans were even less impressed with Onc's walking trip than they were with the bike trip to Africa and filled the post's comment section with jokes and criticism.

"Try walking to a job interview," one wrote, another adding, "Didn’t get any donations so they got to walk it to Africa now instead."

"Hope you make it to Africa so that you can really see who needs a GoFundMe page," wrote a third Instagram user.

The derision the couple earned for their initial fundraiser doesn't look like it will be going away any time soon, so it might be a good thing the pair are taking a break from social media.

Though many insist Onc will be back soon, adding that he likely won't be able to walk for very long without sleep.
