They're the most-worn shoes in any household, but how do you clean them?

Most of us own a pair of slippers or Ugg boots, but does anyone know how to clean them?

While a good pair of slippers is one of the most sturdy winter shoes one can buy, they are prone to a range of stains because they're worn all the time, both inside and outside.

Cleaning expert Nicole Gibson says the trick to getting marks out is acting fast and knowing what fabric the shoe is made from.

"If we look at our traditional boots that many people have, they're made of, like, wool and leather. Ideally, we don't put them in the washing machine," she said.

"We want to spot-clean them."

The most common stains Uggs and slippers encounter are oil, water, dirt and mud.

"If we're dealing with an oil stain, put some bicarb soda on it, which will absorb the initial oil into the soda," Gibson said.

"Then dust that off, grab a suede brush or a clean, unused toothbrush, use some leather cleaner on the stain ... most people with leather couches would have a leather care kit, use that.

"The key, because you don't want to leave any water stains, is to dry the area with a hairdryer on low heat."

If the stain on the Ugg or slipper has come from water, Gibson recommended a different approach.

"Anything with water stains on most fabrics, you can spray white vinegar over it, and that will get the water stain out."

If you don't want to apply a solution to the boot, you may be able to brush the water stain out of the suede.

"If you don't have a suede brush, you could use a soft-bristled toothbrush, or I've been really successful with those magic eraser pad sponges," Gibson said.

When it comes to mud and dirt stains, however, the last thing you want to do is rub the stain.

Instead, Gibson recommends getting the vacuum out.

"If you were to try and wipe off the mud on a boot, you're actually going to just rub it more into the fabric," she explains.

"What's been successful for me is a wet vacuum or just a vacuum cleaner

"Just vacuum it up straight away to try to lift up and pull out all of that dirt, dry dirt or wet dirt, it will lift off with a vacuum."

When it comes to cleaning the inside of the boot, there's a simple fix to getting rid of that musty feet smell.

"You don't want to wet it, use a damp microfibre towel and wipe down the inside of it."

"If it's quite potent, sprinkle some bicarb soda into the Ugg and let it sit overnight, that should absorb the smell.

"Then just tip the powder out and wipe it down with a damp microfibre cloth."

She says a good pair of Uggs will last you forever, as long as you take care of them and use prevention techniques.

"The first step is prevention. With most of these slippers, you want to waterproof them," Gibson said.
