Home hacks guru reveals how to clean your white sneakers in just five minutes

We've all had that moment when we're dressed up to go out and realise some part of our outfit is looking worse for wear just as we're leaving the house.

Professional organiser and home hacks guru Anita Birges had this very situation on the weekend before going to a holiday lunch.

Birges noticed her white sneakers were looking a little dirty and dull, so she used a quick cleaning hack that takes only five minutes.

She shared her trick in a video posted to her TikTok and Instagram accounts.

The best part about Birges' hack is that she didn't even need to take her sneakers off to clean them.

For the hack you'll need a toothbrush, shaving cream and a wet microfibre cloth.

"Put a little shaving cream onto your sneaker and scrub away with a small brush," Birges explained while demonstrating with her shoe and foot propped up on a chair.

The next step is to wipe clean with a microfibre cloth and then you can clean the other shoe.

Before cleaning her other shoe, Birges gave viewers a look at the difference between her freshly cleaned shoe and her dirty shoe. The clean shoe looks noticeably whiter and brighter.

"It's these little time saving hacks that make a real difference in my life. Make sure you save this hack for later! I'm sure you will need it one day," she wrote in her Instagram caption.

Birges' followers loved the hack with many responding in the comments section with applause emojis.

"I've only had mine for 5 months and it's already trashed, will try this," one said.

Other viewers offered their own white sneaker cleaning hacks, though some would take longer than five minutes so won't help you if you're in a rush.

The faster hacks included using Magic Erasers to remove scuffs and dirt, a cotton pad with nail polish remover, makeup remover or baby wipes, Jiff and Gumption.

If you have more time, a follower suggested using the washing machine. "I put all my fabric gym shoes/sneakers in the washing machine on a gentle cycle," they said.

While the shaving cream hack got Birges' shoes cleaned, her followers did notice the shoelaces weren't quite as white as they used to be. The most popular solution for cleaning laces seemed to be Napisan.

"My son would take his [laces] out [of his shoes] and in hot water dissolve Napisan, and leave soaking over night in bucket/container," one person commented.

That's another one you'd need to do well before leaving the house, so if you wanted your laces clean in five minutes you'd be better swapping them out for a new pair.
