"And this right here is why you need to clean your washing machine," Tonya said in the clip.
"The crazy thing is the filter was clean in this washer so I didn't think it would be too bad, but when I put the cleaner in and put it on self-clean, it was a four-hour cycle and this is in the last hour.
"Imagine thinking your clothes were clean getting washed in this."
After the cleaning cycle Tonya also cleaned the door seal and the exterior of the machine.
The comments showed a wide range of knowledge in regards to cleaning the washing machine, with some hearing about the filter for the first time while others claimed to be cleaning theirs regularly.
"The filter?? Oh my. Where do I find the filter?" a woman asked.
"Washing machines have a filter?" another said.

And in stark contrast, "Do people not read manuals? it says to run a clean cycle every so many loads, wipe down the door/seal after use and leave the door open."
The video also sparked a debate about front versus top loaders with many attributing the dirty water to the type of machine.
"Another reason to not own a front load," one said.

However, the type of machine doesn't make one dirtier than the other they just have different parts that need cleaning.
In the case of front loaders, there is a seal around the door that can get mould and grime build up if the door is not left open so the machine can dry after use. The seal also benefits from being wiped dry after use too.
"Top loads and front loads require basic cleaning maintenance, most people don't do it on the top loads and they think there better or less work," one said.
