Apparently there's a right way to put top sheets on the bed and people are very passionate about it
Top sheets might just be the most controversial bedding item with yet another debate erupting on the internet about them.
In addition to 29 per cent of Aussies deciding not to use them and overseas travellers confused about their purpose, now some people are finding out there's a right and a wrong way to put top sheets on the bed.
The discussion kicked off on Facebook after a woman posted a question to find out why her mother-in-law insists on having top sheets upside down on the bed.

"My MIL is staying with us for a couple of weeks, and I noticed she puts the top sheet on her bed upside down. I changed it once, but she changed it back. It's kind of embarassing to ask her, but why would anyone put the top sheet upside down?" she posted in the Home, Garden and DIY Facebook group.
The question received 1,000 comments with many declaring the mother-in-law's top sheet preference to be correct.
"Because it's the way it's supposed to be," one said.

Putting a top sheet on the bed upside down isn't just an arbitrary rule, there is a reason for it which can make a huge difference when styling the bed.
"If it has a print it is so when you fold the blanket and sheet back the print shows," one said.
"So when you turn the sheet over the blanket at the head of the bed, the right side shows," another wrote.
This is particularly important if you like the current trend of placing part of the top sheet over the top of the quilt cover for a contrasting feature.
Another styling trend that benefits from the top sheet being placed upside down is folding the quilt down about a third of the way, as demonstrated in this Big W styled bed below.

If you're not concerned about styling, the third reason for placing the top sheet on the bed upside down is so the side without hems and tags isn't touching your body.
That being said, some in the group didn't think it mattered which way the sheet goes or what your preference is.
Even though there is a preferred way to do it, if you like your top sheet the other way or don't even want to use one that's perfectly fine.
But if someone visiting is a stickler for the right way you might just have to style their bed with the top sheet upside down – or they can do it themselves.
