The $19 buy that instantly upgraded my home office

It has only been recently that I've put some thought into my home office set up.

When I first started working from home, I used to just sit in front of the TV on the lounge with my laptop. My coffee table was my accidental office desk.

Several months later the back pain began, so I invested in a proper home office setup including a desk and a chair with back support.

For my birthday my partner bought me a screen from JB Hi-Fi to plug my laptop into. I even have a ceramic coaster for my coffee cup that my daughter gave me which is super cute. She works at The Reject Shop and looked out for one that had my initial on it.

And my best friend bought me the Wicked coffee mugs from Kmart which come in a pack of two – a pink one for Glinda and a green one for Elphaba. Each morning I choose the one that suits my mood.

But it has been a pretty basic set up, until this year when I started trying to spruce it up a bit, and it's looking much better.

Of course I've been trying to do this on a very tight budget, which is how I ended up in the technology section of Kmart.

I normally go to Kmart for things like pet products, makeup pads and exercise equipment, but continue updating my office I decided to check out their tech.

I wasn't that keen, until I saw an incredible keyboard that I knew immediately I had to have, that would change the entire vibe of my home office set up.

This Anko membrane wired keyboard is beige, orange, and blue.

The first thing I checked before even looking at the price was if the keyboard was 'clicky' enough. I always need a clicky keyboard. I have no idea why.

And I was so happy to discover that it is super clicky. Then, I checked the price. $19. Sold.

This keyboard is a wired keyboard, which is fine by me, and it doesn't have a 'Print Screen' button, which is a bit annoying but I have found a work around for this.

But I'm really enjoying it.

My son pointed out that it is a gamer keyboard, and he actually loves the fact it has dials instead of buttons for functions such as the volume.

And I'm happy to report these dials make a satisfying turning sound when used.

I've never been one for a silent keyboard. I want my actions to produce noise. Maybe it makes me feel more productive? I'm not sure.

And to my added delight, this keyboard lights up, which is completely unnecessary for my work as I mostly work during the day, but one of the best parts of working from home is being able to work in whatever way suits you.

And from now on I only work when my keyboard is lit up! Because why not.

I briefly considered purchasing a second one to use in the office on my in office days, but out of consideration to my co-workers who may not appreciate how clicky this keyboard is, I refrained.

Keyboards are one of the most affordable ways to upgrade your home office and there are so many to choose from.

At Officeworks you'll find a Bonelk KM-383 wireless keyboard and mouse combo in purple for $49.

The great thing about this one is that it comes with the matching mouse, while I have to find one to match my new keyboard, but I'm pretty sure I'll find lots of options and this one is available online.

If you go into an Officeworks store there are even more bargains to choose from like these Studymate keyboards for $19 each, and it comes in purple and pink or black and orange.

JB Hi-Fi has some great choices as well. Like this Havit backlit gaming keyboard for just $16.

I just really love keyboards that light up, even for boring, non-gamer work.

Or this Playmax mini mechanical gaming keyboard (Topo) for $69 which is so cute with fun colours. I actually really love this one, and it looks clicky as well.

But you'd have to buy a mouse separately, although you could choose from a range of colours to match.

Then Amazon has some great options as well, including this cute green backlit gamer keyboard for $48.27.

Or this wired backlit keyboard that comes in a range of backlit colours including orange, purple, blue, and pink, for $28.59.

I just know that going forward, I will always choose a colourful keyboard, and it may as well light up as well.

The more affordable ones don't come with a mouse, like my Kmart one, but I can find either a blue or orange one to match the shade on my keyboard and then my home office set up will be perfect.
