Stunning budget-friendly DIYs to decorate your home with for Christmas

Christmas preparations are in full swing as the festive season gets closer, with decorations one of the most important parts of making the holiday feel magical.

However, as the cost of living continues to rise, it's getting harder to find gorgeous decorations on a budget.

That's where handy DIYs come in. Using inexpensive products and a bit of creativity, you can have the Christmas décor of your dreams.

DIY Wreaths and Garlands

You can elevate your living space with a DIY garland made with a shower curtain tension rod.

You can get one from Kmart for $12 that extends to 120-200cm or from Amazon for anywhere between $20 to $60, depending on the desired length.

Put the tension rod between two walls in the spot you wish to decorate and set it to a height that's easy for you to reach.

Next grab your green garland tinsel from anywhere that sells Christmas décor. Kmart has a few on offer, including a plain green one for $10 or a light-up garland for $12.

Spotlight also sells one for $12. Just make sure you buy enough to wrap around the entire curtain rod, depending on its size.

Wrap the garland around the shower rod to cover up the rod.

Now it's time to accessorise! You can use baubles you already own or pick some up from the local shops.

One TikTok creator also added red beaded garlands to the rod, which she got from Kmart for $2.

Add any other decorations you like to the garland and when it's done, carefully push the rod up the wall.

For a DIY wreath, save money by buying a plain wreath with no decorations on it.

Kmart sells one for $5 or you can get one at Spotlight for $9.

Now simply decorate it yourself with a hot glue gun and decorations.

You can add handmade bows or little baubles, lights, fake flowers, whatever you want!

DIY Gingerbread houses

Kmart's most recent viral Christmas decorations, the Light Up Ceramic Gingerbread houses, are so popular it's difficult to get your hands on one.

But have no fear, if you missed out, there are ways you can recreate the decorations.

You can paint the $10 Medium Ceramic Houses from Kmart with some acrylic paint to make them look like gingerbread houses.

You'll also need a white graphic marker to draw on the icing details.

Officeworks sells the Born Acrylic Paint Set, which comes with 40 paints, for $22.

You can also get a white Liquid Chalk marker there for $4.21.

You could also try for the wooden version Craft Wood Blank LED Light Up Christmas House from Kmart for $8, and paint that any way you wish!

You can also find wooden gingerbread houses on Amazon, which are made as DIY sets for you to paint. There's a pack of 6 available for $54.99.

DIY Oversized Bow

The oversized bow trend is sticking around this Christmas, but it seems that the only colour you can get is red.

That is, unless you make it yourself!

One mum used two red and pink striped large table cloths from Kmart to create an oversized bow for her Christmas tree topper and showed the process on TikTok.

The tablecloth is 3.25 metres long by 1.50 metres wide. You may need more fabric depending on how big you want your bow!

She simply cut the ruffle hems off the fabric, cut it to size and laid the tablecloth flat.

Next she used hot glue to stick two bits of fabric together, creating one big pillowcase in the shape of a rectangle.

She then gathers the fabric in the centre and ties it, before stuffing either side of the bow with some pillows.

The bottom part of the bow was made with the remaining fabric.

The entire project is held together by hot glue.

You can recreate the DIY with any large enough tablecloth, bed sheets or buy fabric in the size you need from Spotlight..
