Removing mud stains is easy if you remember to do this one thing first
Whether it's a small spot or a a complete drenching, mud-stained clothes need attention before going in the washing machine.
Getting rid of mud is a simple process and can be done with items you already have at home.
It requires a bit of patience though, because unlike most stains it's better if you don't treat it straight away.

This goes against the typical advice for treating stains as, in most cases, treating it sooner rather than later is best, but for mud stains it's easier to tackle if you wait.
What you'll need
- Soft-bristle brush like a toothbrush or a spoon
- Stain remover of your choice
- Laundry detergent
How to remove a mud stain
1. Wait for the item of clothing to dry and then gently scrape off as much mud as possible using an item like a soft-bristled brush. You can also try a hand-held vacuum to help remove the caked on mud.
2. Once you've removed as much mud as possible, treat the stain with a stain remover by gently rubbing it into the stain with your finger.

For this you can use a small amount of your regular liquid laundry detergent or even a paste of baking soda and water worked in with a toothbrush.
Leave for three to 15 minutes or for the recommended time in the product information if you've used a stain removal product.
3. Wash as normal and dry on the line.
If the stain is still on your clothes when you take it out of the washing machine repeat the above process.
Avoid using the dryer to dry your mud-stained clothes in case some of the stain is still present. Hot air can actually set the stain making it much harder and potentially impossible to remove.
If you prefer soaking to treating the stain, you can pre-soak the item before washing instead of doing step two.
