Grout is one of those cleaning tasks most people turn to bleach for but there are plenty of other ways out there.

One of those options is probably one a lot of us haven't considered given its main function of removing marks from walls.

However, it seems magic erasers could be the secret to transforming stained grout back to its original colour.

The product was suggested by members of the Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook group when a woman asked for solutions to clean her dirty tile work tops.

Magic erasers – which is the common term people use for any melamine cleaning sponge as well as a brand name itself – were the most popular solution mentioned in the post.

One member even shared a photo to prove how well it worked to turn her dirty grout back to white.

"Magic eraser...i didn't believe it until I tried it," they captioned the image.

"Elbow grease and magic eraser works brilliantly!" another said.

"Magic erasers work wonders," a member commented.

This suggestion is backed up by cleaning writer Shifrah Combiths, who finds magic erasers so good to clean grout with she has started looking forward to the chore.

The only downside she has found so far is that the melamine sponges quickly break down due to the abrasiveness of the grout.

"Here's the secret: magic erasers! I know there are grout pens out there that whiten grout, but that's just paint. I want to actually clean my grout. Magic erasers get the job done, and they do it quickly and relatively painlessly," she wrote in an Apartment Therapy article.

"Technique-wise, I usually cut my standard size magic eraser in half, wet it to slightly more than damp, and scrub the grout line as I squeeze gently. I find that the wetness seems to help loosen the dirt. I swipe with a dry rag and move on to the next line."

Magic erasers can be found in most supermarkets, hardware and department stores and range in price depending on the brand.

Some of the cheapest options we've found so far are the $5 Coles Ultra quick block eraser two-pack and the $2 six-pack of cleaning erasers from Kmart.
