This shower glass cleaning hack actually works

Anabela Rea

If you're inclined to be a perfectionist, the glass in your shower is probably one place where you have to turn a blind eye.

Although supermarkets abound with shower cleaners, taking your shower from blurry to shining like crystal seems just about impossible, doesn't it? The products just don't seem to work.

Searching the internet for a hack that will actually do the trick, I've come across people suggesting using everything from half a grapefruit sprinkled with salt (sounds more like a funky dessert?) to spray on cooking oil (an appetiser?).

They might work, but I think I'd rather keep food out of my shower. There's enough going on in there already.

If you're inclined to be a perfectionist, the glass in your shower is probably one place where you have to turn a blind eye.

So when your landlord is due for an inspection, or you're about to hold an open home, who are you gonna call? How do you get your shower shining? I think I may have the solution.

Long ago, once upon a time, an ex-boyfriend of mine's grandmother used to swear that she cleaned the shower with dishwashing liquid.

When I saw someone else suggesting the same online, with the addition of handy household acid - white distilled vinegar - I knew I was onto a winner.

Here's how to use it at your place.

You will need:

  • Tap water
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • An empty spray bottle
  • An abrasive or eraser sponge.
  • A microfibre cloth

How to do it:

  1. Combine equal parts water and vinegar inside your spray bottle.
  2. Add one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid to the mixture. (You may like to add more for larger stains.)
  3. Spritz onto your shower glass areas and leave to sit for 15 minutes.
  4. Come back and scrub the stains with your sponge, then dry with a microfibre cloth.

To prevent water stains building up again, use a squeegee after every shower to remove excess water, and spritz with a solution of half-half water and white vinegar once a week.
