The fridge can become a very stinky place thanks to all the food and drink stuffed in there, which is sometimes left for far too long.

While cleaning it out and wiping down the shelves will help combat odours you can also try a simple DIY hack to keep the appliance smelling fresher for longer.

Mum Anna Viktori shared her cheap yet effective hack for a nicer smelling fridge in a TikTok video.

DIY hack for getting rid of fridge odours with coffee and salt in foil

Viktori uses aluminium foil, salt, coffee and a toothpick to make a little sachet.

"Did you know that salt and coffee can prevent unpleasant odors in your refrigerator? Definitely try this," she captioned the video.

To make the odour-buster, Viktori placed a sheet of foil flat on the bench and then added about a tablespoon of ground coffee and a tablespoon of salt in the centre.

She then wrapped this up into a parcel and then poked some small holes in it to allow the ingredients to both neutralise and absorb the fridge odours.

Viktori's hack was a hit with those who viewed the TikTok.

"Wow love it! I will definitely try this," one said.

"Interesting idea," a woman commented.

"Wow so fun," another posted.

The reason coffee and salt work so well is because the nitrogen in coffee while salt has a neutral pH that allows it to absorb odours.

However, you don't need to wrap coffee up with salt to make an effective odour absorber for your fridge.

You can simply put the coffee grounds in a little dish or open jar and it will be just as effective, though Viktori's hack isn't likely to spill everywhere if knocked over.

If you don't have coffee and/or salt in the house, you can also banish odours using baking (bicarb) soda.

One option is to put the baking soda in foil, wrap up and add a couple of tiny holes on top as per the hack above, or add a few scoops to a dish or small container and pop in the fridge.
