Buy a rug, really!
Believe it or not, a washable rug in the kitchen is a sensible and practical addition. They allow you to add something that's a bit more interesting between your island bench and your cooking area. It's an opportunity to add some colour, pattern and texture.
As for cleaning, you put it in the washing machine, it dries quickly and then it goes back down on the floor.

Display the good-looking appliances
The biggest challenge in a kitchen space is having adequate access to your appliances – keeping some on display and hiding the ones that aren't as visually appealing. I think there's something really quite chic and whimsical about a bench mixer. They look purposeful and really cute and if you choose the right model, it's an aesthetically pleasing thing to add to your kitchen functionality, amenity and styling. Also great on the kitchen bench are a kettle and toaster, it's just like the go-to gold standard of something that you need that's functional in your kitchen, so it might as well look good. If you choose them well, and they're interesting to look at, why not see them?

Print from the kitchen
I recommend a printer and a label maker because that's what I have in my kitchen. Let me explain, rather than having a big bulky printer somewhere in your home office, it's cool to have something smaller and portable to move around the house. For me, when I want to print something, it's usually a return label for something I've got to post or it's something that I need for work and I'm working from the kitchen bench, having a portable printer means you can move the printer around the house with you, keep it in a cupboard or a drawer in the kitchen.

As for the label maker, the containers in your cupboard are only really useful if you know what's in them. So if you have labels and they're all neatly printed and they all match, and they're all stuck on your matching containers you can sort your whole life out and everything can stack up and neat.
