Experts say this beverage is better at removing carpet stains than store-bought cleaning products

A beverage people are more likely to spill on the carpet than know it can be used for cleaning could be the secret to finally removing carpet stains.

Experts recommend the alcohol over store-bought carpet cleaners and hacks like vinegar and baking soda for unsightly marks on your floor rugs.

So it might be worth keeping some vodka in your cabinet even if you don't plan to consume it.

Dallas Maids owner, Greg Shephard, told the Daily Express any type of clear alcohol can be used on stains, including rubbing alcohol and white wine.

He recommends blotting the stain first and then pouring the clear alcohol on it.

"This is better than any over the counter product," he said.

The experts at appliance brand Shark are also fans of using vodka to remove carpet stains and said it's particularly good on grease and blood stains.

"Give it a couple hours of contact time, and then blot it up with a microfibre cloth," they said.

However, when blotting a stain be gentle and careful not to push the stain further into the carpet.

Speaking of stains, vodka can also remove stains on clothing and upholstery too as well as remove smells like body odour and cigarette smoke.

The reason vodka works so well at removing carpet stains is because of its high alcohol content. This means it also disinfects and removes bad odours.

The quality of vodka doesn't matter when used for cleaning so even a cheap bottle will do and it's handy to have in the house as it cleans almost everything.

One thing vodka is particularly good at cleaning is mould, which can be tricky to clean as you need to remove both the stain and the fungi spores to stop mould coming back.

To use vodka for cleaning mould you can make a DIY spray with equal parts vodka and water. Spray the mixture on the mouldy spot and let it work its magic for 15 minutes before wiping away with a cloth.

Vodka can be a good alternative for those who can't stand the smell of vinegar, which is the most commonly recommended mould cleaning and killing product.

While you've got the vodka out you can also use it for glass and mirrors with a vodka and water spray for a sparkling finish.

And then try it in the kitchen for removing sticky residue and grease, particularly from the backsplash.
