Halloween 2020: How to trick-or-treat safely

The jury's still out on Halloween this year. I've been closely following the conversations being had by parent groups on socials and there are two firm camps - those determined to go ahead with the spooky tradition and those who are opting out.

My children are desperate for it to go ahead. My boys have autism so they aren't the most social people but they do love to go trick-or-treating so I always try and make sure it is special.

Still I understand many families aren't comfortable participating this year. Some parent friends are opting out for health concerns, others I suspect are using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to opt out of Halloween this year.

I know some families planning different activities at their homes such as lolly hunts.

We'll probably end up trick-or-treating at as many participating homes as we can find following but we will remain be sure to follow as many health recommendations as possible.

While Halloween health recommendations have been issued by separate states and territories as well as local hospitals and council websites, they all differ slightly.

So we have put together the best advice we could find for easy access.

They are:

1. Include a face mask or face covering in your choice of dress up;

2. Trick-or-treat in family groups only;

3. Maintain social distance from other groups at all time;

4. Use hand sanitiser before and after collecting treat from each location;

5. Have a horror-ific Halloween!
