Why this sign at a local shop is confusing customers

A sign at a Perth fruit and vegetable store has left customers scratching their heads over the price of cauliflower.

The photo of the sign has been shared on Reddit's 'Perth' thread along with the description: "I'll have 2 half cauliflowers please."

The special shows cauliflower selling for $2.50 each or 99 cents for half, meaning customers can purchase two halves for $1.98.

And it seems cauliflower heads are not the only grocery prices being sold in halves, with one Redditer suggesting it may have nothing to do with price but more to do with preventing waste.

"In Eastern Europe they sell half loaves of bread specifically for pensioners living on state pensions," one said.

"I've seen half loaves in Australia. But they barely reflect that in the price. To me it always looks like paying a premium to not have bread go bad before a person can eat it all or freeze it," another added.

"Nothing unusual. Woolies often have Half Rock melon cheaper than whole ones, It doesn't make sense," added another shopper.

Another observed: "They do this with cabbages as well. All it does is consume more plastic."
