How Australian grocery prices compare around the world

Australia isn't the only country struggling with cost-of-living pressures and there's no better example of this than grocery prices.

A customer in Poland has shared a photo of what €20.90 ($32.20) will get you at the supermarket which is "5.5 hours of our minimum wage after tax."

The photo has been shared on Reddit on the 'Poverty Finance' thread. Clearly Polish locals are also feeling the pinch with inflation to December 2022 sitting on an extraordinary 16.6 percent.

In the photo we see a kilo of tomatoes, a dried fruit snack, hommus, dried herbs, muesli, oranges, apples, bananas, an avocado, an onion, shortbread cookies, a jar of pasta sauce, pasta, mushrooms, a banana cake, eggs, rocket salad, chicken breast, two tubs of yoghurt, vegetable juice and herbal tea.

While this Polish local seems dissatisfied at the increasing cost of groceries in the country, a quick comparison with grocery prices in Australia, New Zealand, the US and the UK shows they are among the most affordable.

Buying similar items in Australia is much more expensive, totaling $76.53 at Woolworths online and $75.04 at Coles online.

Inflation in Australia to December 2022 stands at 7.8 percent and Aussies have been warned of worse to come in 2023 with both retailers ending price freezes in January and further interest rate increases expected.

The next most affordable country in which to purchase similar items is the UK, with Waitrose online totaling £45.77 ($80.10.) In the UK inflation to December 2022 sits at 9.2 percent.

Next is New Zealand where similar items via New World totaled New Zealand at $105.78 ($96.96.) Inflation in New Zealand came in at 7.2 percent to December 2022.

The US came it at the most expensive, with similar items purchased via Walmart online totaling US$69.74 ($98.85) where they are experiencing 8.5 percent inflation to December 2022.

"Where I live in Canada you'd get less food than that for 6 hours of work min wage," one Redditor commented on the original post.

Another commented on the affordability of groceries in Poland, writing: "I am Portuguese but I worked in Poland for a year eight years ago, the difference between what you can buy in Poland with minimum wage it's huge. In my opinion Poland is one of the best countries in Europe when we look to groceries price comparing to the minimum wage."

"Other countries are crazy bad," another added. "I'm from the states visiting here in the Virgin Islands. Yesterday I paid €18 ($27.72) for a 1lbs of ham, €7.99 ($12.30) for bread and €10 ($15.40) for a jar of mayonnaise. The minimum wage here is €10.50 ($16.17).

Another points out: People forget wages and cost of living are different in different places. Average of $23,400 USD ($33,109) a year in Poland vs $54,000 $76,614) for the United States (2.3x more in the US).
