She was one of the world’s most famous women. She might also have been the most difficult.

Grace Kelly of Monaco was “haughty, arrogant and awkward”, according to royal photographer Reginald Davis.

Davis, who has photographed some of the world’s most glamorous princesses, recently spilled behind-the-scenes details on his subjects after more than four decades as a royal photographer in his new book My life photographing royalty and the famous.

And according to the Daily Express, the photographer said the American actress turned princess was “the most difficult royal I have ever photographed”.

“She only agreed to a private audience because I had previously had a private audience with the Queen,” Davis told the publication.

“Everyone wanted to shoot Grace,” he said. “She was such an attractive woman, why be so haughty, arrogant and awkward?

“Of course, you’d never know that from looking at her face” he said. “(In the photo) she seems every inch the relaxed, happy mother.”

His favourite? Queen Elizabeth’s sister Princess Margaret, who he describes as: “just so vibrant — and had these beautiful azure eyes.”

“She really was the Diana of her day. Everything I took of her was in demand.”

Davis accompanied the royal family on a number of state visits and royal tours around the world.
