'My best friend gets too involved in my relationships, and it's driving me crazy'

9Honey | As told to Sally Hunt

It seems whenever I get into a new relationship, my best friend Sally* has to get involved in one way or another.

Even before she meets the new man in my life she does her "research", which means going on social media and stalking him. It's always a good thing if he has a private account because then she can't snoop. She is just so nosy and annoying.

It all started when I was dating my last boyfriend, Matt*. Sally didn't approve and said she had a "bad feeling" about him — she thought he 'looked like a cheater' and she claimed to want to protect me.

One night Sally insisted on coming out with us, along with a guy she was dating at the time. It was embarrassing because she asked Matt so many intrusive questions; it was like she was my mother asking questions of a potential son-in-law. I cringed the whole night.

She was asking details about where he lived, his work, past girlfriends and things she didn't really need to know about. At one stage he said, "Wow, I'm really getting grilled here!"

The next day Sally phoned me to say she thought Matt lied about where he has worked, because she googled a couple of the places he said he'd worked at and there was no mention of him. I told her how ridiculous that was — a company website doesn't retain details of past employees once they've left.

The worst was when I started dating another guy who Sally thought was "creepy". She ended up going on his social media, following him and "'liking" several photos. She even questioned his sexuality, because there were a lot of photos of him with his male friends and no photos of him with female friends.

That relationship didn't last — he ended up being too controlling so I left him after half a year of dating. Sally was relieved and still refers to him as "the creep."

When it comes to her own relationships, Sally keeps things very much to herself. I once asked her why she gets so involved in my relationships when she barely answers any questions I have about hers and she said, "It's because I'm a very protective friend and I care about you."

I do appreciate that she is a loving and caring friend, but there have been many times when it's just felt like she's being nosy and is getting too involved in my business. I would never stalk some guy she's started dating on social media, and I definitely wouldn't make it obvious by following him and "liking" his photos, it's ridiculous.

Aside from all that, she's a great friend and I love her dearly. I just wish she'd leave my boyfriends alone and let me sort out whether they're good enough for me or not.
