Mum's quick thinking saves son 'suspended' by seatbelt

Siobhan Sherbovich was driving with her eight-year-old son when her swift thinking saved him from a potentially fatal seat belt accident.

The Massachusetts woman noticed Brayden had become tangled in the seat belt beside her and was frantically struggling.

The belt then began strangling him, Sherbovich telling NBC 10 he called out, "I can't breathe" and "I'm stuck" from his seat.

The contraption was connected to the roof of the car, which had caused it to pull tighter against the boy's neck as he pushed away.

"Before I could even process anything, he was basically hanging from the ceiling," Sherbovich said.

"Unconscious, blue as can be, there was blood coming out from the pressure."

The car's lock mechanism was engaged, and Sherbovich was unable to free her young son. The mum ran to a nearby hair salon to get someone's attention in order to help.

Two stylists assisted Sherbovich, calling the ambulance and grabbing a pair of scissors to cut Brayden out of the suspended seat belt.

Elizabeth Costa told NBC 10, "All I could think about was my four-year-old screaming for me."

Sherbovich recalled her son collapsed from the ceiling after he was released and fell out of the car "completely unconscious".

After a round of CPR, he regained consciousness and was confused by the situation.

Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno, an officer of 31 years, said he'd never encountered a situation like the one Brayden was in.

The Police Chief praised Sherbovich for her response.

"There's no playbook on a parent should do it," he told WHSV.

"For her to keep cool, to go into a facility, a salon, get a pair of scissors, come out, cut the seat belt off her son, begin CPR and essentially save his life is just absolutely amazing."

A spokesperson for Acura, the manufacturer of Sherbovich's car, said it was waiting to learn more details about the incident and passed along instructions on proper seat belt use.
