Zambrero giving away 90,000 burritos to celebrate Mexican restaurant chain's 300th store

Mexican-inspired restaurant chain Zambrero is opening a new store in Melbourne - its 300th.

To mark Zambrero Hawthorn's big debut, the Australian-owned chain is giving away 300 free burritos in its 300 stores worldwide.

That's right, there are a total of 90,000 burritos up for grabs.

Thanks to the chain's Plate 4 Plate initiative, the big burrito giveaway means another 90,000 meals go to those in need across developing countries.

Dr Sam Prince founded Zambrero back in 2005 in Canberra.

Nearly 20 years on it has stores serving healthy Mexican-inspired meals across Australia, as well as in New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and the US.

Prince was inspired by his aid work as a 21-year-old medical student to establish Plate 4 Plate.

It's an initiative that donates a meal to someone in need in developing countries with every burrito or bowl purchased.

Luke Grady has opened 10 restaurant franchises across Melbourne in the past nine years and is the man behind the latest opening.

"We're very excited to open the 300th restaurant in Hawthorn," he said in a statement announcing the opening.

"There's a real buzz around Melbourne at the moment with lots of new Zambrero restaurants opening in and around the city."
