Eagle-eyed shopper notices a big change for Woolworths customers

An eagle-eyed Woolworths shopper has discovered a big change to the supermarket's trolleys.

In a series of photos obtained by 9Honey, the Woolies customer captured a line-up of new trolleys that had been stocked at her local store.

A green plastic basket-like tray has replaced what used to be a completely metal tray on the previous design.

A message printed on the side of the new trolleys reads 'Pushing for a greener future'.

Woolworths has confirmed the rollout of new trolleys was a part of its plans to "grow greener for customers and the environment."

A spokesperson for the supermarket giant tells 9Honey the green trolley baskets are made from "100 per cent recycled plastic" and "give used milk bottles a second life in our stores, while also reducing the use of new materials to create trolleys."

"Our recycled trolleys have been very popular with customers and are currently available in select stores," they continued.

"We plan to continue rolling them out to new stores over the coming years.

"We're increasingly using recycled plastic in our products and throughout our stores to do our bit to help create a better tomorrow."

The new trolleys have only been rolled out in 70 stores across the country but the supermarket giant plans to increase the spread over time.

In recent years, Woolworths has publicly committed to becoming more environmentally-friendly.

The green trolleys are just one aspect of a series of new initiatives that work towards "cutting emissions, eliminating food waste, reducing plastic and sourcing responsibly," as per the Woolworths website.
