A Woolworths shopper received the shock of her life when she saw a live frog inside a sealed bag of lettuce, in what the supermarket has labelled an "isolated incident".

Laura Jones from Esperance, Western Australia shared a now-viral video of the extraordinary find on TikTok.

The video, which has been viewed 5.9 million times, showed a sealed bag containing two cos lettuce heads, with a green frog climbing on top of them.

"Discounted lettuce, should have paid full price," the video text overlay reads in part. Jones added the phrases "fly high" and "should be set free".

The frog was almost the exact same colour as the lettuce, which could have made it easy to miss.

The product had been marked down to $1.15 as a "Quick Sale".

Jones and her partner Billie Le Pine, originally from New Zealand, recall her flatmate saying, "Bro, I've got a frog in my lettuce!"

After filming the video they set the frog, which they named Greg, free, Jones has told nine.com.au.

As to how Greg survived that amount of time in the sealed bag, Jones has a theory.

"In Australia and New Zealand, a lot of the produce and packaging has got air holes in it for the product to be able to breathe and stay fresh as well, so it had essentially fresh air the whole time," she speculated.

"It had a snack in there as well, and there was probably enough condensation in there to give it a bit of water as well, so it was probably quite happy."

The frog has since been released onto the property where they live, which includes a freshwater dam.

Jones said Woolworths reached out to them after the video went viral and the story started being shared.

The company offered to replace the lettuce in addition to giving them a gift voucher, which they are yet to collect.

She is equally shocked at how many times her video has now been viewed, almost six million times, which she commented is "more than the population of New Zealand".

"Woolworths takes product quality and food safety very seriously. We work with a number of lettuce growers in WA and across Australia," a spokesperson for the supermarket told nine.com.au.

"Our suppliers have rigorous processes to maintain product quality.

"For heads of lettuce this involves washing and a number of quality checks, which includes checking for foreign materials, before they are packaged and sent to our stores.

"This is an isolated incident with no other reported cases. Our teams are investigating this with our suppliers as a priority.

In 2021 a baby snake was discovered in a bag of lettuce purchased at Aldi.

Writing in the Mosman Living Facebook group, Lesley Khun shared a cautionary tale for others to "check packed lettuce carefully!"

"Last night my son found this baby white headed snake in with the packaged baby cos lettuce he purchased from Aldi," Khun wrote alongside photos of the packet.

A spokesperson for Aldi told nine.com.au at the time: "We've worked with the customer and the team at WIRES to identify the snake's natural habitat, which is certainly not an Aldi store! We thank WIRES for their support on this."

"We are working closely with our produce supplier to investigate how this incident could have possibly occurred."

Khun said on Facebook that WIRES Wildlife Rescue had come to remove the snake after it was discovered.
