A waiter has taken to TikTok to offer a glimpse behind the curtain of working in a busy restaurant.

US man Mac told followers he has performed almost every role imaginable in the hospitality industry and had some trade secrets to divulge.

"I used to be a waiter. I've been a bar back, food runner, bus-boy. I even bartended a little bit, and let me just tell you guys some stuff…" Mac began his video.

Mac's first secret was a not-so-subtle admission about kitchen staff. "Chefs usually hate customers," he explained.

"I don't know how to describe it, but any type of thing that comes back to the kitchen like 'Oh, chef, can we get a little bit of mayo on the side? They asked for it.' The chef will literally be like, 'F---!'"

He then revealed the white lies which waiters and floor staff often tell customers.

Mac said if a waiter is asked for their recommendation or if a dish is good, the answer will always be "yes".

"We're always going to say it's good. We're always going to lie and make something up," he continued.

"If you ask us like, 'Oh, is that healthy for you?' I'm just gonna be like, 'Yeah, it's actually one of our healthiest options – total lie."

Mac said he once worked at a five-star sushi restaurant in New York, where staff were told to lie about how fresh their produce was.

The owners told the waiters to lie and say the fresh sushi was delivered every week from Japan.

"That s--t came like maybe every two weeks," Mac added. "I don't know why, we just lie. Being a waiter you lie to everyone."

Finally, Mac said it wasn't uncommon for waitstaff to steal food off customer's plates.

"All the waiters and all the staff, we're hanging out in the kitchen eating fries off of your plate," he revealed.

"Normal thing, taking a fry [and] eat it off the plate. We eat a lot of the food. We steal stuff in the restaurant: food, a Tupperware."

The biggest lie is about whether the food is healthy. TikTok

Some of Mac's followers didn't agree with his stance on lying to customers.

Several commenters, who also worked in the restaurant industry, said they were always honest about the food.

"As a server, I will 100% admit when I don't like a dish," one person wrote.

Another added: "I've tried both and I swear customers appreciate it more if you are honest with them about the food and act like you're getting them in on secrets."

Some, however, said Mac was right on the money with his evaluation of waiters.

"Super accurate, especially the part about chefs hating customers," one added.

"Straight facts. As a server sometimes I lie for no reason, the lies just come out," another said.
