No more messy burritos! Students create 'game-changing' edible burrito tape

A group of American engineering students have come through with one of the most innovative creations of our generation – edible tape that will hold your burrito together.

The students from John Hopkins University in Maryland US, call their creation 'Tastee Tape', with the product being an edible adhesive tape that will keep burritos and wraps in their neat, originally packaged form.

The "game-changing" idea came from student Erin Walsh, who was reportedly eating a burrito one day when she experienced the all-too-familiar issue of the entire burrito falling apart after one bite. Watch the video above.

Tyler Guarino, a student who helped develop the edible tape recalled the moment to Baltimore news station WBAL-TV 11. Watch the video above.

"She was eating her burrito one day," Guarino explained, "and it was just everywhere. And she was like, 'You know what? This is a problem to be fixed.'"

At the time, the students had been tasked with an assignment to create a unique product for their engineering school's annual 'Design Day'.

And while the tape is sure to be a hit with many burrito-lovers, the students say they're not disclosing their recipe just yet.

"What I can say is that all its ingredients are safe to consume, are food grade and are common food and dietary additives," Guarino said.

For the sake of demonstration, the team used blue food dye to show their product in action, though the original tape is a normal clear colour.
