Some of Australia's bars have been named among the best in the world, placing in the World's 50 Best Bars list.

Sadly for Sydney-siders, Melbourne has been determined as the Australian city with the most best bars, with the winner of the title of The Best Bar in Australasia being situated there – namely, Caretaker's Cottage

The venue – located in an old cottage in the middle of Melbourne CBD on Little Lonsdale St – rose two places from last year, settling into its spot in number 21 on the top 50 list.

The team also took out the Michter's Art of Hospitality Award.

Sydney followed close behind with The Rocks venue Maybe Sammy. The Hollywood glamour-inspired bar took out the 26th spot on the list.

And in a pleasant surprise, a new modern Australian cocktail bar Byrdi – located on La Trobe St in the Melbourne CBD – came in at number 35 on the list.

Their website claims it is a bar that is "uniquely Australian where the local environment informs the drinks."

The number one spot on the list was claimed by Handshake Speakeasy, located in Mexico City. It marks the first time a bar from Mexico claimed the number one spot.
