People are decorating pineapples like Christmas trees, and it's awesome

It's true, Australians have always had a bit of a love affair with the pineapple.  If we're not putting it on our pizzas or burgers, we're praising our Northern Hemisphere neighbours for their work in advancing the pineapple cause with such inventions as the pine-o-lantern or barbecued swineapple.

So needless to say, we are officially getting behind this next Insta-trend – the pineapple Christmas tree.

A simple search of #PineappleTree or #PineappleChristmas on Instagram will get you hundreds of results for the trend.

From shiny festive baubles to Christmas lights and sunglasses, people are having a ball dressing up this spiky tropical fruit for the holidays.

Seeing as though Australia celebrates Christmas during our summer months, we can't think of a better canvas for some festive flair.

There are plenty of good reasons to swap out your regular pine for one of these adorable centrepieces — to start, the fruit doesn't take up a lot of room, it's super affordable, much cleaner (no pesky pine-needle droppings), and you can eat it after you're done.

So can we make this our national Christmas tree, already? Pretty please?
