New York State Fair unveils annual butter sculpture—and it's the most American thing we've ever seen

Every state, county and little town has their quirky time-honoured traditions. For New York State Fair it's the annual grand reveal of their giant butter sculpture in which 360 kilograms of glorious butter is rendered inedible in the name of art.

This year marks the 48th year of the butter sculpture, and in true 'Merican style the 2016 sculpture has outdone itself with its patriotic theme. Watch the video captured live by Syracuse.com above to see who took out the golden honours (that was a hint, people).

But is its overt Americaness really any surprise after last year's proportionately patriotic masterpiece?

The yellow-hued sculpture is displayed on a rotating turntable in a refrigerated case for the full 12 days of the fair. However, sad news for butter lovers hanging out to help "dismantle" the tribute—artists are required to heat the butter to high temperatures and then chill it again prior to carving, a process which makes it easier to sculpt, but renders the stuff inedible.

After the fair is over the sculpture is melted down and scraped into buckets for composting via a specialist process performed by the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency.
