Nestle to launch Milo without cane sugar

Milo is a quintessential Aussie drink that is a staple in most kitchens across Australia.

But Nestle Australia has just announced that the malt chocolate powder is getting a healthier twist.

The new Milo will contain 30 per cent less added sugar after the product received a 4.5 health star rating last year.

Nestlé General Manager Andrew McIver has confirmed that the new Milo still has the same crunch and taste.

Milo was originally designed as a nutritious drink for undernourished children during the Depression, delivering added vitamins and minerals in a format children enjoyed.

“With parents increasingly concerned about added sugar in their children’s diets, we’ve created an option that is true to the Milo heritage and encourages people to drink milk, but delivers less added sugar.”

Like the original Milo recipe, it contains lactose, which is a natural occurring sugar in the milk powder, and added sugar in the malt barley.

But there is no cane sugar in the beverage. Instead Nestle have included stevia for sweetness, soluble corn fibre for texture, to give a new version that closely resembles the 85 year family favourite.

“From the very beginning, our focus was on creating a product that both tastes like original Milo, and behaves like original Milo,” Mr McIver said.

“That means not just keeping the same core ingredients of milk powder, cocoa and malt barley, but also making sure it looks the same, tastes great, and has crunchy bits on top,” he said.

The new Milo will set you back $6.99 and will hit supermarket shelves in early May.
