The top five McDonald's menu items for 2021 have been revealed

As a fun way to end the year that was 2021, McDonald's has released its official list of the most popular menu items from the past 12 months right across Australia.

In a year full of lockdowns and drama, Maccas was a constant, with drive-thru often getting us through the tough months. McDonald's discounts, promotions and easy pick-ups brought a smile when a lot of other things seemed grim.

So, we think it's great fun that the company has released its top five items.

We were a little miffed that fries didn't make the list, and surprised by what took out the fifth spot: the cappuccino. But we think it's probably testament not just to the ease of grabbing a coffee at McDonald's, but that a lot of our favourite cafes and diners were closed.

So here it is: Maccas top five menu items from 2021, the year that was saved by cheeseburgers and nuggets. Where did your favourite McDonald's bite rate?

2. Hash Browns: A crunchy, golden brown crust with steaming, fluffy potato inside.

3. Big Mac: A delicious juicy burger, with two 100 per cent Aussie beef patties, crisp iceberg lettuce, melting signature cheese, onions and pickles between a toasted sesame seed bun. And don't forget the McDonald's special sauce!

4. Chicken McNuggets: Everything's better when it's bite-sized. Like Macca's nuggets, made with tender juicy 100 per cent Aussie chicken breast in a crisp tempura coating.

5. Cappuccino: All your favourites in one — espresso, full cream milk, a generous layer of froth and a sprinkle of chocolate powder. Coffee fit for an Aussie.
