Macca's viral McGriddles are finally in Australia - here's our brutally honest review

In good news for Aussie Macca's fans, the new McGriddles range is now available on the breakfast menu.

So – naturally – the team at 9honey Kitchen rushed out to try it, to see whether this sweet and savoury breakfast treat is the global sensation it's made out to be.

We taste-tested the Bacon, Egg and Cheese McGriddles and the Plain McGriddles, which are only available until 10:30am daily. Here's what we thought.

First off, we had high expectations after the items went viral overseas and seemingly had good reviews.

The Bacon, Egg and Cheese McGriddles cost a cool $8.75 each Down Under, while the Plain McGriddles are $4.70 each for a bundle of two, so prepare to splash some cash for the items.

The cakes also look appealing – they have the iconic Maccas logo, the golden arches, emblazoned on the top.

Almost immediately as we opened up the brown paper Macca's bag, we were met with a overwhelming sweet smell wafting through the office.

Macca's describes the Bacon, Egg and Cheese McGriddles as a "rasher bacon, a fluffy omelette egg made with Sunny Queen Farm Eggs and a slice of melty cheese between two soft, warm maple infused pancakes".

While the maple might be a hit with foodies overseas, lots 9honey staffers think this item just doesn't suit Australian tastes.

"Too sweet for Aussie tastebuds, especially for a breakfast item. But it's a fun novelty that's worth grabbing while it's here," one person said.

"The smell of the maple pancake 'buns' is so nostalgic, it takes me right back to eating the pancakes as a kid!" another added.

"I can't say I love them combined with the egg and bacon – I'd rather a classic McMuffin and then have the Griddles plain as a separate sweet treat."

One taste-tester said it was a "let down".

"As a big fan of pancakes with bacon, the McGriddle was a bit of a let down; it was too sweet and the texture was a bit too spongy," they said.

"I am glad I tried it, but probably wouldn't try it again."

Another said they can't understand why the breakfast item went viral.

"I went into this thinking I'd fall in love – but I didn't. I don't know what the world is talking about," they said.

"It's unfathomable that people would prefer this over a classic McMuffin. Not for me. Way too sweet."

However, the Plain McGriddles went down a storm and were a hit.

"Delicious," one person remarked.

But one person said they had a strong "aftertaste".

"I feel like if it was a bit crispier instead of a dense pancake it would be more appealing," they said.

There are also Sausage and Cheese McGriddles and Sausage, Egg and Cheese McGriddles that we are yet to try.

TikToker Adrian Widjy said his "prayer had been answered" when he tried the new range.

Other social media users have branded the dish "the greatest breakfast treat [I've] ever had".

"It's sweet, it's tasty... just absolutely perfect. 10/10," one user said.
