'It will blow up': Woman's warning after kombucha 'explosion' left her injured

A woman in the United States has issued a warning after bottle of kombucha reportedly exploded in her fridge.

"This is your friendly reminder that if you have kombucha in your refrigerator and it has been 'kind of a long time,' don't touch it," TikTok content creator Morgan Bailey explained in a recent video.

"Get some oven mitts and – I don't know – maybe some protective eye goggles. It will blow up."

Bailey shared the video on TikTok @morganlaubailey along with the caption: "Not sure what kombucha has against me but... my wedding saved my finger though #kombucha #oops."

In a subsequent video, Bailey explained more about the incident that left her hand bandaged.

She said she left a bottle of the popular health drink in her fridge for around three months.

"I touched it and I guess the pressure of my hand moving it a little bit made it turn into a literal bomb," she said.

"There was glass everywhere, all over my kitchen, the walls, the ceiling."

Bailey continued: "I'm thankful I was wearing my glasses because it actually went into my face."

She claimed the 'explosion' left a large cut on her hand.

"I was in shock. I immediately saw that the cut on my hand was pretty bad, so I wrapped it up in paper towels and didn't look at it again because I'm squeamish," Bailey said.

"Our dog was in the kitchen with me, so I was nervous that he was hurt. I checked him even before wrapping my hand, and thankfully, he was totally fine. Then my husband took me to the hospital."

She said the cut happened directly "between my fingers and around my ring finger and down my palm."

"It was pretty gross," she said. "I could see some stuff inside my hand. I'm very lucky though, I just needed stitches. I just need to wear this and have stitches for the next two weeks and then I'll go back and get them removed."

Many of Bailey's TikTok followers shared similar stories of kombucha incidents.

One shared: "Also a friendly reminder to check your car for lost kombucha in the winter... it will explode all over your car. Bonus points if there's chia seeds."

"I had a kombucha on my desk one time for too long and it exploded and woke me up in the middle of the night," another said.

Kombucha is a sparkling drink made using a sugared tea infusion, which is fermented for several days using a type of tea fungus that contains acetic acid bacteria and yeast.

If there is still a lot of leftover sugar after the first fermentation, that can cause an overflow of carbon dioxide gas, which causes pressure and ultimately leads to the bottle rupturing, Doctor Katherine Thompson-Witrick told SELF.

One TikToker suggested opening bottles of kombucha regularly to allow the gases to release to prevent incidents such as these.

Others joked: "My diet coke would never," and, "My cherry coke would never."

"The way I RAN to the fridge to throw out my old kombucha with goggles, oven mits, and tongs," another shared.
