Cult biscuit Kinder Happy Hippo returns to Australia after 11-year hiatus

Aussie fans of the cult European biscuit Kinder Happy Hippos will finally get to taste the decadent bite-sized treat without hopping on a plane.

Today, the Kinder treat launches in Australia after an 11-year absence.

The biscuit is beloved overseas, particularly in the UK and Germany where millions are bought each year.

After being introduced in Australia, the treats enjoyed a cult-like following until they were discontinued in 2010.

Now, the Happy Hippo is back on Aussie shores, retailing for $1 at leading supermarkets and convenience stores.

The hippo-shaped biscuit features a crispy wafer shell, and a smooth and creamy filling, coated in crunchy meringue sprinkles. Fans can choose between two filling flavours; cocoa or hazelnut.

Gina Yuwana, Senior Brand Manager at Kinder said the product is "One of our most popular products around the world".

From May 6 the Kinder Happy Hippo hits shelves in major supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide, retailing for $1 for a single pack, or $4.50 for a five-pack.
