Ikea announces it is now serving $2 plant-based hot dogs
The cult-classic Ikea favourite has just received an upgrade that will be music to the ears of vegetarian customers across Australia.
The iconic Ikea hot dog is now accompanied by a plant-based version which is available in stores across the country for just $2.
Aptly named the Plant Dog, the new plant-based hot dog is made with rice protein and enhanced with carrot, onion and apple. According to Ikea, the treat "offers a smoky, satisfying taste".

For those concerned that the Plant Dog will pale in comparison to the original meat version, Ikea Food Manager Tim Prevade says not to worry.
"We've spent a lot of time in development to perfect not only the Plant Dog taste, but the texture so it gives the classic 'snap' when you bite into it, just like a traditional hot dog," he said.
In celebration, an Ikea Plant Dog truck will be touring the new menu addition around Sydney on Tuesday 28 May. Ikea Family Members, who present their membership, will be welcomed to sample the new treat or a serving of Ikea's plant-based meatballs for free.

"We're excited for our Australian customers to get a first taste of the new IKEA Plant Dog, with our bright yellow food truck hitting the streets of Sydney this May," Prevade said.
The delicious, plant-based move comes as Ikea attempts to make steps towards a greener future.
"With our new plant-based version of the famous IKEA hot dog, we've created a delicious alternative while continuing our commitment to reduce our climate footprint," said Prevade.

By making these "healthy and sustainable products" more accessible, Prevade says the company hopes to inspire more plant-based eating among Australians.
The launch of the Plant Dog is part of Ikea's broader commitment to make half of its restaurant's menu plant-based by 2025 as they aim to offer "heathier, affordable, and sustainable options" for customers.
