There is nothing worse than getting home from the shops, unpacking your fruit and veg, and discovering that one of your choices isn't as ripe as you might want it to be.

Now, a farmer has shared a simple trick to help you pick a good watermelon, and all you need is two fingers.

Posting in the Mums Central Facebook group, the woman revealed she had asked a farmer the "secret to finding a good watermelon".

"He said to make sure the dark green lines are two fingers width APART," the farmer explained.

"When we got watermelons yesterday, I put that to the test and cut the watermelon up," the shopper continued, crediting The Crazy Fruit and Little Pine Learners.

"IT WAS DELICIOUS. Glad to know a simple way of finding a good watermelon."

The post received thousands of likes, and hundreds of comments from people grateful for the tip.

While a third confirmed: "We got the best watermelon Friday from using the two finger rule!!!"

Others shared some additional tips of their own, with one person commenting: "Look for the yellow spot where it sat to ripen."

"My mother was raised on a farm and she would thumb it, and if had a bass tone it was ripe. It works every time," another suggested.
