A chef has slammed the favoured method of making bolognese with pre-made sauce or the common addition of fresh tomatoes.

Culinary expert Alex has branded these ingredients as "horrifying" and has posted a video to enlighten his followers on the "correct" way to make the popular Italian dish.

"Every time I see someone making a bolognese, I am literally horrified," he said.

"This is a super simple dish. You do not need a jar of Dolmio sauce, which, by the way, is disgusting.

"In fact, you don't even need tomatoes, not from a can and not from a vine ... because bolognese is not a tomato sauce."

Alex went on to explain it was a meat sauce, which uses a different list of ingredients.

"Just grab your soffrito, that's carrot, celery and onion, chopped up finely [and] brown your meat," he said, showing viewers how he creates the staple meal.

"Remember, brown it properly, I don't want to see any grey meat," he warned, adding: "This is a mixture of pork and beef."

Alex gave viewers a quick tip, advising them to take their meat out of the pan to cook the soffrito in the mince juices, which elevates the dish's flavour.

"Italians, look away. Add a little bit of garlic once it's softened, add your meat back in and then add about three tablespoons of tomato paste," he continued.

"When that's caramelised, deglaze with a cup of red wine, give it a stir and then add just enough water so you end up with a thick sauce."

The chef continued: "Let it simmer on low for a minimum of an hour, up to three hours [and then] add a splash of milk and pasta water at the end.

Alex concluded the video by quipping: "And if you want something that's quick for dinner, don't do something that needs to be slow cooked."

Fans were quick to debate in the comments over the correct way to make bolognese.

"I learned today that you can never vary a traditional Italian recipe without a fault unless you are a chef or an Italian," one user joked.

Dolmio is a popular jarred-sauce brand that makes bolognese sauce with tomatoes, which many said they prefer to use rather than making it from scratch.

"If it's not Dolmio, it's not the real deal," another added, echoed by: "In your opinion. Dolmio is actually delicious as is making it from scratch."

Disagreeing with that sentiment, one user wrote: "When you cook it this way you'll understand why the creator is hating on quick Dolmio bolognaise so hard,"

Traditional bolognese is a classic Italian meat sauce that is a little different as it has no tomato sauce.
