A top chef has shared his fun way to find out if a boiled egg is cooked perfectly, and it's all in the wrist.

Nick Evans, Head Chef Lecturer at Rick Stein's Cookery School, says all you need is a firm surface to test out how well your egg is cooked.

"This happens to us all the time here, you've got two eggs, you're not sure which one is cooked," he says.

He then picks up one of the eggs and gives it a spin on the bench.

"If I take one egg, give it a spin, not a lot happens," he explains, as the first egg fails to spin well and falls to it's side.

"If I take the other egg, give it a spin, if it spins like that, it's cooked," he says, showing the second egg spinning perfectly upright.

He explains this is because the yolk is hard boiled so stable towards the bottom of the egg, giving it the weight and stability for a good spin.

If poached eggs are your preference over boiled eggs, Jordan Moore, senior recipe developer at food box company Gousto, says it all comes down to how fresh the eggs are.

He tells the Daily Star: "As eggs get older, the whites get more liquid, meaning you run the risk of the whites spreading around your pan."

Jordan says if older eggs is all you have, boil them instead.

He then advises amateurs to crack the egg into a mug instead of straight into the boiling water, and to add a drop of white vinegar or lemon juice to the water before adding the egg.

"The acid reacts with the egg-white, allowing it to firm up more quickly, rather than spreading through the water," the continues.

Jordan recommends a cooking the egg on a simmer instead of a light boil and using a deep pan or pot to achieve the desired shape.

His expert level tip is to create a gentle whirlpool in the water for a perfectly round result.
