Avocados are one of those fresh fruits where the window of ripeness is maddeningly narrow.

The pitted green jewels are the staple of so many dishes (thanks to an uptick in brunch culture), but because they can be expensive and scarce, it's important to keep them fresh for longer.

A low-waste expert from eco organisation Brightly revealed there is a simple method for preserving your beloved avocados.

According to Alyssa, it's all about storage. She says you should store your avocados in a freezer as this makes them last up to four months.

"If you eat avocados often, you know that they can spoil very quickly," Alyssa explained in a video.

"But with this method I'm about to show you, you can keep them fresh for up to four months, which is a crazy amount of time."

Alyssa said she buys her avocados in bulk, so she needs to store most of them so they keep well for meals and recipes weeks later.

She separates the avocados she plans on eating for the next seven days with the rest of the bunch.

Then, the ones she won't be eating soon are stored in the freezer.

"It's basically like freezing time. Months later, I go back to check on my avocados and they look like the day I put them in there," she continued.

"Once you take them out of the freezer, all you have to let them do is sit them out for an hour."

Alyssa prefers her avocadoes at room temperature, so she takes them out of the freezer the day she wants to use them.

In the clip, she cut open an avocado she had frozen three months earlier. The fruit was just as fresh as the day she bought it.

"Now you have fresh avocado for months to come," she added.

Typically, an avocado takes four to seven days to fully ripen. The best place to let this happen is by sitting them out on a kitchen counter.

Alyssa's hack works for fully-ripened avocados that have not browned or gone mushy yet.
