Grandma's McDonald's meal shows no sign of rot after 24 years, and TikTok is officially freaked out

Katherine Scott

In the latest stomach-churning instance of someone holding onto their old McDonald's burger for too long, a TikTok user has unveiled a hamburger and fries that have been hiding out in her grandmother's closet for 24 years.

As with other similar McDonald's clips we've seen, the meal combo hasn't rotted or decayed. In fact, it's in downright pristine nick.

TikTok user @aly.sherb shared footage of the eerie unveiling last week, captioning it: "Make this go viral, y'all #grandparentsoftiktok #mcdonalds #fyp #decadechallenge #foryou #happymeal".

The clip shows as the grandmother opens a white box labelled "hamburger", revealing a very aged McDonald's paper bag.

"This is the sack that it came in and it was advertising a Nascar race in 1996," she explains, dating the meal to be 24 years old.

Starting with the French fries, which are browned and withered, the woman points out that while they look like they've maybe fallen under your seat a month or so ago, "they've never rotted or decayed".

The burger comprises a dry-looking meat patty between two buns, and is missing toppings like cheese, pickles, onions and sauce.

After inspecting the menu item, she concludes: "The hamburger itself, the bread has never moulded, the meat has never rotted. It's never even broken, it's completely intact."

Viewers were understandably terrified by the finding, with comments ranging from "I'm uncomfy" to "wrong".

"Bye I'm never eating fast food again NOPE".

"Pretty scary when you think about it".

"So I bite into a peach and I find maggots and mold but this woman kept a hamburger for 20+ years and not a single piece of mold?"

Unsurprisingly, viewers had a lot of questions surrounding the closeted item.

"Wait WHY DOES SHE HAVE THIS?"

"GRANDMA NO!"

"I just wanna know what made her think putting a mcdonald's hamburger in a box for 24 years would be a thing she should do?????"

@aly.sherb later clarified why her gran had held onto the fast food meal for so long: "It was for a science experiment, she's a teacher".

While many were quick to put the Macca's meal's longevity down to "preservatives" and chemicals, this claim has been refuted by McDonald's in the past. In a now-defunct post on the McDonald's Canada website, microbial expert Dr Keith Warriner said the reason Macca's didn't decay was due to the cooking processes, which removed any moisture that would usually cause it to rot.

The terrifying zombie Macca's haul is becoming a disturbingly common trend — in fact, it isn't even the first instance of its kind to emerge this year. In January, Utah man David Whipple unveiled a 20-year-old McDonald's burger in pristine condition he'd been saving since 1999, originally to use in a presentation about enzymes and how things deteriorate.
