Gender reveal lasagnas are now a thing

Gender reveal cakes – where a pink or blue centre announces the sex of your unborn child – are trendy among many parents-to-be.

But now there's a new way to surprise guests at your baby shower.

Gender reveal lasagnes are now a thing, thanks to a New York restaurant.

The cheese and meat layers are dyed either pink or blue to match the gender of your newborn, offering a savoury alternative to the traditional sweet variety.

For $196 AUD the lasagne is made to order with fresh pasta, alfredo sauce and both ricotta and mozzarella cheese, and is said to be large enough to feed 12 people.

The price also includes a salad of your choice — garden, Caesar or Greek.

The gender reveal lasagne is the brain-child of New Jersey eatery Villa Italian Kitchen. 

As part of its promotion, the restaurant is encouraging customers to share a photo of their gender reveal party with the hashtag #LasagnaReveal on social media, for the chance to win a free meal.

Although the colourful lasagne may sound delicious to some expectant parents, others aren't too keen.

"Not even Garfield would touch that lasagne," one person wrote on Twitter.

While another said, "Ewwwwwwww......I would be throwing up as I'm slicing it. That is so so gross. Disgusting. I'm sorry but not a good choice of revealing."

The restaurant claims to have been creating "authentic" Italian cuisine in New York since 1964. Although the idea of pink and blue dyed cheese sounds a little off-putting, perhaps the naysayers should try the lasagne before judging.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, remember.
