Sydney shoppers left scratching their heads at local fruit shop's sale sign fail

Local shoppers have been left scratching their heads after a sign advertising a special on blueberries listed two conflicting prices.

Shared to a local Facebook group, one shopper posted an image of the sign, writing, "How's your maths?"

The special said shoppers could buy one punnet of blueberries for $0.99, or three for $5 – making the three for $5 actually $2.03 more expensive than if shoppers bought five punnets, which would still be four cents cheaper ($4.95) than the sale price for three.

Facebook commenters were largely amused at the numerical confusion, with one person simply writing, "lol."

Another person wrote, "In that case, I'll buy two."

"Or 99 cents each blueberry?" another joked as a possible explanation for the three for $5 actually being cheaper than the $0.99 per punnet.

Yessen Antar, who is the owner of the store, which is located in the Sydney suburb of Chatswood, actually responded to the post with good humour and an explanation.

"I own the store. What happened is the single unit price is on a different system to the multi-buy," Antar's explanation began.

"So the staff member who changed the price this morning didn't update the multibuy before printing the sign. It was only there for a little bit before we noticed! You guys crack me up. Don't worry our customers are very smart. We wouldn't dare try to [outsmart] them."

One Facebook user replied to Antar, writing, "I like how you own this. You could have just hidden away in Facebook land but you stepped up and braved the comments!"

Another user praised Antar's prices compared to other stores, with one user joking, "All publicity is good publicity right 🤣"

To that, Anton cheekily wrote: "I mean everyone's so caught up in the mistake nobody is mentioning how good of a deal that is."
