The Fridge Files: The staple item Brooke's fridge just can't keep up with

Jane de Graaff

This week we're taking a look into another everyday fridge for our Fridge Files.

As always, it's just a chance to see how other people live and eat and what takes priority in their fridge. We're never here to judge, just to take a behind-the-scenes look into the busy lives of families of every shape and size, through the lens of their cold storage. Often there is something fun to be learned along the way, and there's always a lot that we can relate to.

Brooke is a 30-year-old Sydney-based secondary school teacher and her fridge feeds herself, her husband, 39, and their three young and very active boys: Ethan, nine, Eamon, six, and Charlie, three.

If there's one thing Brooke knows, it's that you can never have enough half-time oranges for sports days and that there is never enough milk in the house.

So let's check out the fridge. We open the door, and the little light flickers on to reveal...

9Honey: How often do you shop?

Brooke: One big grocery shop a week at Aldi and Harris Farm. A little top-up shop on the weekend from the local bakery and Harris Farm.

9Honey: What's the oldest thing in your fridge?

Brooke: Pickled jalapenos, you never know when you'll need a little extra spice.

9Honey: What is something you always have too much of?

Brooke: Oranges, always an oversupply from Saturday soccer refuelling.

9Honey: What do you always buy, but never use?

Brooke: Kids' frankfurters, we always keep a packet at the back of the fridge for a quick, convenient meal, but never get to using them in time.

9Honey: What are three things you wish you always had in the fridge?

Brooke: Wine, wine, and... wine.

9Honey: Where do you keep your milk?

Brooke: Open milk is in the door. Closed milk is on the shelf. We're using 12 litres of milk a week, which is crazy!

9Honey: Do you keep tomato sauce in your fridge?

Brooke: Yes, in the fridge.

9Honey: Do you have any fridge tips or tricks that you use?

Brooke: Put paper towel at the bottom of the fruit and vegetables compartments, it makes it way easier to clean.

9Honey: Do you have a way that you organise your fridge?

Brooke: We're inconsistent, just empty the grocery bags onto the shelves. There's no time for fridge planning or organising.

9Honey: Do you get fridge envy and what's your dream fridge?

Brooke: I'll dream of a self-cleaning fridge, and a double door would be glorious too.

9Honey: How often do you cull fridge items?

Brooke: Condiments, maybe once a year. Fruit and vegetable drawers, not as often as we should.

9Honey: Anything else you'd like to say about your fridge?

Brooke: I'd love a secret compartment full of cheese and fancy condiments that I don't have to share.
