Former MasterChef star shares hack to halve your chicken spending

Former MasterChef star Steph De Sousa has taken to TikTok to share a chicken hack that could slice your grocery costs in half.

Opting to buy whole chickens and cut them herself rather than purchasing pre-cut poultry has saved the chef "a ton of money" over the years.

The video, which has amassed more than 100,000 views, shows the mother-of-four holding up a whole chicken and explaining the hack.

"This one skill has saved me more money on my groceries than any other I know in the kitchen; dissecting a whole chicken" she said.

Shortly after, the star demonstrated how to dissect the chicken, splitting it into breast, wing, thigh and leg pieces.

"I'm going to break this into three sections for you, first one is the Maryland, the thigh and the leg," she said, instructing fans to pull the leg away from the body of the chicken, locate the thigh bone and make a neat cut.

Sousa similarly removes the wing, pulling it away from the main carcass and cutting at the bone.

The chef explained to separate the breast required a tad more focus however, requiring her to run a knife "down one side of the breast bone a little bit at a time" until you reach the bottom and the whole breast has been exposed.

"I usually do four at a time so I have bulk cuts for the freezer," a third chimed in.

Others, meanwhile, had their own twist on the hack.

"I do this too, I also debone it, roast the bones and cook them in water with veggie scraps to make chicken stock, saves so much!" one wrote, to which Sousa replied, "So yummy and so good for you."

Some even went to the extent of posting their own attempts at mastering the hack.

A user by the name of @theaveragehousewifeaus praised Sousa in her own video, showing how she'd managed to buy enough chicken for eight dinners and have leftover food for her dog for less than $25.

The duetted video alone received over 200,000 views.

"Wow I just did the math and to get all of these cuts separately at Coles it would cost $75.32 and that's the cheapest options for all," someone wrote under the video.
