Chicken owner makes surprising discovery inside unusually large egg

A chicken owner has made a surprising discovery inside unusually large egg.

Cori Higgins shared the find on the BackYardChickens Facebook page.

"My poor girl layed [sic] the biggest egg I have ever seen, there was a yolk, whites and another egg inside," Higgins wrote, sharing four photos of the discovery.

They shared four photos of their find. In the first we see them holding the large egg in their hand.

The next photo shows the egg with the top cracked off, and inside another egg can be seen!

The final photo shows the large egg contained the egg white and yolk in it, as did the smaller yolk.

"Never in 18 yrs of having chickens and can't say as I've ever seen one like this! I've had double yolks though," one Facebook follower commented.

Another explained: "Counter peristalsis contraction! When a formed egg goes backwards in the oviduct and gets stuck in a forming egg.

"The second egg then continues forming around the first. Doesnt happen often but cool when it does!"

Another chicken owner, Janice Shea, said they had "the same thing a couple months ago" and shared their own photo.

"I have never seen an egg inside another egg, that is insane," added another.

"Amazing how that happens! Hope your laying chicken is doing OK," commented one Facebook follower.

"Bless her HENroids!! I personally collected a massive egg yesterday, and I'm anticipating a double yolk, a whole other egg inside, or perhaps a baby triceratops," added another.

Another chicken owner, Nicole Seward-Romero, has also found an unusually large egg laid by her chooks, posting a photo showing it next to a regular-size egg.

"This was a huge egg, too! Felt sorry for my hen, too. It was delicious," Beverly Schwab shared, showing her large, double-yolk egg in a fry pan.

"Everyday is a surprise when we gather our eggs!" said another Facebook member.

"Had one like that that was store-bought a few years back. Double yolkers are quite common these days, but not this," another shared.

"I had a chicken that laid one like that once! It was Huge!" said one chicken owner.

"Yes… I had one last year and it was the same… crazy to see another one," said another.

These chicken owners are likely thanking their lucky stars they are seeing such excellent results, considering the cost of eggs at the moment and continuing shortages, due to a bird flu outbreak.

Shelves remain empty, if not scarce, and shoppers in most locations are limited to two cartons of eggs per person.

"I imagine it's going to get worse before it gets better," third generation egg farmer Danyel Cucinotta told Today.

"You can't just turn it back on, there's an entire process that the vet plan outlays, including disposal, cleanup, disinfection and then repopulation of about two million birds, which can take still another probably 12 to 18 months."

He predicts stock will return to shelves in spring, when free range flocks are in better production and birds start to lay more regularly.
