A few dishes are considered staples when you're entertaining as an Aussie, and one of them is, of course, the cob loaf dip.

It's one of the most easy things to throw together, it feeds a crowd, and everyone has their own take on how to make it perfect.

We're well and truly into that part of the year where no one knows what day it is, we're all sick of leftover ham, and there's one dish that will never disappoint – the cob loaf.

It's the quintessential dish that's become a centrepiece of many Aussie BBQs and family gatherings, and we're pretty sure everyone has tucked into at least one in the last week.

But while everyone loves a cob loaf dip, there are some quite divisive takes on the dish.

From what flavour reigns supreme to the 'secret' ingredient that guarantees the perfect cob loaf dip, Aussies are very passionate about it.

It may have been a retro favourite, but one thing is for sure: the cob loaf is never going to go out of fashion.

With humble beginnings of what many would consider the OG cob – spinach and cheese – the sharable dish has turned into quite the culinary delight.

From cheese and bacon to French onion and cheese, onto more elaborate flavours like butter chicken or even nachos in a cob loaf – not to mention what could only be described as pure decadence with dessert-style cobs – it's probably one of the most versatile dishes on a table at a family gathering.

So, what makes the ultimate cob? A lot, apparently

It's all in the seasoning, according to several cob enthusiasts we spoke to.

"In my experience, a sachet of instant soup is the key to a delicious filling," one person said.

It's gooey, warm and cheesy, but the real key to nailing the cob is the seasoning.  Supplied

While many would usually go for the good ol' packet of French onion soup, she suggested that mixed vegetables flavour is also a good option.

"The secret to the perfect flavour is onion powder and garlic powder, it's not the same without it," added another.

Someone else explained, "The key is to use garlic and paprika powder, and salt and pepper."

We love it hot

The general consensus is the filling has to be warm for it to really hit the spot – but, really, it's all about the bread.

"I don't mind the temperature of the filling as long as the bread as a nice crust on it. It can't be floppy," said one person.

I personally believe the filling has to be warm and the bread perfectly toasted for the cob to really deliver.

The best way to serve a cob loaf dip

Now, in terms of serving it, this is where people are starting to get very creative.

"On the weekend, my sister-in-law was going to do a cob loaf but instead she just did the dip and supplied sliced bread," replied one person from the office.

"We all agreed that it was better because a) you don't get soggy bread and b ) you don't have to awkwardly try to rip bits off while holding a wine in the other hand."

Another person from the office – who admits she's not good at sharing – has come up with the perfect way to serve it to a group.

"I put a very important twist on mine, because I don't like sharing. Instead of using an actual cob loaf I use those little dinner rolls you get from the supermarket and make mini individual cob loafs," she explained.

"They're absolutely delicious and requested from my siblings at every family gathering!"

Another friend I spoke to said the only way to serve a cob is with the addition of a sliced-up French stick, making sure you've got the ultimate bread-to-dip ratio.

So, use this information wisely and whip up one incredible cob during one of the next long weekends. Hey, why not make it dinner tonight?
